Why We Waited to Add Gluten-Free Buns (And Why Now’s the Time)

At 1950 Originals, we’ve always strived to maintain high standards without cutting corners — and that extends to how we approach dietary accommodations. Gluten-free diets have become increasingly common, whether due to celiac disease or simply an effort to reduce inflammation and improve overall health. And while many restaurants have rushed to offer gluten-free buns, we decided to take our time — and here’s why.

Why We Didn’t Jump In Right Away

Too often, gluten-free alternatives have fallen short in both taste and texture. Most gluten-free buns have historically been dry, grainy, and lacking the satisfying bite of real bread. On top of that, they’re expensive — both for us and our customers.

We weren’t willing to offer a gluten-free bun just to check a box. It had to feel like quality bread, taste great, and hold up to our burgers and dogs the way our regular buns do. That’s the 1950 Originals standard.

After months of testing different vendors and recipes, the wait is finally over — we’ve found the one. Our new gluten-free buns are soft, sturdy, and most importantly, delicious. Whether you’re celiac or just cutting gluten, you can now enjoy the full 1950 experience, no compromises.

What Makes Gluten-Free Bread Different?

Gluten-free bread often lacks preservatives, giving it a shorter shelf life and requiring it to be sold frozen. That’s part of the reason it can feel dry or brittle. But things are changing.

Modern gluten-free breads are using better ingredients — like potato starch, rice flour, tapioca, and cassava — to replicate the softness, chew, and elasticity of traditional bread. These advances are making gluten-free options more appealing and accessible without sacrificing flavor or integrity.

We’re now offering both gluten-free hot dog and hamburger buns so everyone can enjoy our menu the way it was meant to be.

Surprise — Most of Our Menu Is Already Gluten-Free

What many don’t realize is how much of our menu already fits into a gluten-free lifestyle:

  • Our hot dogs are 100% gluten-free

  • All of our toppings (except sauerkraut and green relish) are made in-house — gluten-free by design

  • Our burgers are made from a blend of brisket, chuck, and short rib — no fillers, no breadcrumbs, just beef

  • Fries and sauces? All gluten-free

  • Our grilled chicken adds another great option to the mix

The only missing piece for our gluten-free guests was the bun. And now that’s fixed.

What About the Monthly Specials?

We’ll offer gluten-free buns for all monthly specials — but keep in mind, not every special will be entirely gluten-free.

Chef Danny creates new, unique specials each month, and many of those include ingredients or techniques that may involve gluten. It’s best to ask our team if you have dietary restrictions — we’ll always be transparent and do our best to guide you.
